David Watson wins Young Player of the Year

David Watson is the DoubleTree by Hilton SFWA Scottish SPFL Young Player of the Year.

The midfielder has been an integral and impressive part of the Kilmarnock side that Derek McInnes - who is in the running for the SFWA Manager of the Year award - has guided to a top six finish this term.

And the 19-year-old has now been recognised by association members after topping the vote to land a coveted prize that has been collected by some of the finest young talents in our game in recent seasons.

Watson said: “Winning an award as prestigious as this is an honour, it adds to my PFA award which also means a lot to me.

“The football writers are the ones who watch us every week so it means a lot to me that they’re nominating me to win this, I appreciate it.

“It has been a great season for us on the park, I’m an Ayrshire lad so I know how important the club doing well is to the fans.

“Just a couple of years ago we were in the Championship and now we’re getting ready to get the passports out and go to Europe.”

Watson was joined on the shortlist by Aberdeen’s Connor Barron, Lyall Cameron of Dundee and Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller.

Players eligible for this award must be born on or after January 1 2002, play in the SPFL and qualify to play for Scotland.

Interviews with Watson are in the Sunday newspapers and details of our Manager and Player of the Year awards will be released in the coming days.
