Chick Young named SFWA President
CHICK Young has been named as the President of the Scottish Football Writers Association.
Chick is one of the most recognisable faces and voices in the game today and brings a wealth of experience to the Association following a distinguished career in print, on screen and behind the microphone.
After starting out as a copyboy at the Daily Record in August 1969, Chick went on to work for the Irvine Herald, Radio Clyde, the Scottish Daily Express and The Evening Times.
But it was at the BBC where he became a household name on Open All Mics and Sportscene. And even those who didn’t follow the game were aware of the man himself after he became a key character in Only An Excuse.
Chick has covered six World Cups throughout his illustrious time and will now proudly lead the Association.
He said: “I’m seriously stunned and flattered.
“I thought this ship had sailed after 48 years of membership of this association, but it turns out it was the Waverley I was boarding.
“I acknowledge and embrace the fact that these are ever changing times but it is important to remember and salute the guys who blazed a trail for football writing in this country .
“And to remember that the SFWA was born to fight the cause of its members.
“Scottish football has done us proud but it’s a two way street as far as we are concerned.
“I made the Mo Johnston style switch to broadcasting when some frowned on that but I was born into newspapers.
“Thank you boys and girls. This means a lot to me.”
Chick has been joined on the Committee by The Scotsman’s Moira Gordon and Chris Jack of the Herald and Times.
